SAVORY
SATUREJA HORTENSIS
Satureja or savory is a native plant to the Mediterranean areas belonging to the same family of the mint and thyme. It is also called “anchovy herb” for its spicy aroma.
Savory contains similar substances than those of thyme; their officinal properties are very similar as well.
There are two types of savory; summer (satureja montana) and winter savory (satureja hortensis); the leaves of the winter savory are more aromatic.
Since the past savory has always been considered a strong stimulant tonic, effective aid in assisting sexual functions.
In culinary art savory can be employed in different ways: to add flavour to a legume-, cheese- based cuisine, to fillings, to make liqueurs and bitter liqueurs. Savory is used in honey preparation as well.
